Trichomoniasis Facts
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
- Sexually transmitted disease caused by a protozoan
- Affects both men and women
- Most common curable sexually transmitted illness
- Common symptoms in women: greenish to yellowish discharge from the vagina with a foul odor, discomfort when urinating, pain during sexual intercourse, itchiness or a discomfort feeling in or around the vagina
- In men it can cause an irritation and discomfort in the penis and can increase the risk of contracting and spreading other STDs
- If tested positive for Trichimonasis, ask to be tested for other STDs as well
Trichomoniasis Treatment
- Treatment: single dose of metronidazole and a topical treatment with clotrimazole. Sexual partner should be treated as well
- Latex condoms reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading but don’t eliminate the transmission of this disease
