Testicle Size | The Bigger Ball

As you read in our last blog post, testicles are “born” small and grow in size during puberty and later adulthood before losing some volume in later age. However, testicle size may be affected during fetal development and before birth. Many factors, such as environmental influences and hormonal changes, as well as certain diseases and infections, may affect normal testicular development and size.

Testicle Size or Testicle Volume?

When it comes to testicle size, testicular volume is the most precise measurement. Testicle size, just as genital size, may vary amongst different races and environmental influences during upbringing.Studies have found that the mean volume of a neonatal testis is approximately 0.35 ml. Mean testicular volume increases significantly in the first 5 months after birth, from 0.27 to 0.44 cm3, after which it decreases to 0.31 cm3 at approximately the 9th month after birth. Testicular volume remains stable until an individual reaches puberty, at which point testicular volume could increase by tenfold.

Testicle Size Variations & Factors

As mentioned before, testicle size seems to vary due to a variety of factors. A study published in the Journal of Andrology states that “advancing age, malnutrition, alcoholism, malignancy, and a chronic, terminal illness were each individual risk factors for reduced testicle size, whereas diabetes, narcotic or other drug usage, and pelvic injury were not associated with reduced testicular volume.” Under normal conditions, a testicle is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in length, 0.8 inches (2 cm) in width, and 1.2 inches (3 cm) in height.

Negative Effects of an Abnormal Testicle Size

A vast number of studies published in the field of sexual medicine and psychology have researched the negative effects of an abnormally sized testicle on an individual’s psychology. These consequences include sexual dissatisfaction or even avoidance, decreased self-confidence, and even depression. While many learn to cope with the problem and simply accept it as the norm, others take initiative and seek help because they know there is a solution.
