Premature Ejaculation

Premature Ejaculation (PE) is defined as ejaculation during the course of sexual activity which occurs prior to the satisfaction of the person or partner.

Specific Criteria

Although this may be a subjective basis to make a diagnosis, more specific criteria has been established:

  • Ejaculation within 1 minute of penetration
  • The inability to control or delay ejaculation during intercourse
  • Resulting anxiety and distress leading to avoidance of sexual intimacy

In a recent study conducted in a Swedish university, as many as 33% of males stated that they have had or are currently experiencing Premature ejaculation.

Premature Ejaculation Classification

Premature Ejaculation Causes

PE can be classified in two categories: acquired or lifelong. With acquired PE, the problems with premature ejaculation begin later on in life, after a period of normal sexual experience without problems relating to ejaculation. In lifelong PE, from the beginning of the person’s sexual experience, PE has been present. It should be noted, however, that every man experiences instances of PE throughout their lives. Changes in mood, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, and other factors can cause temporary or transient Premature ejaculation. However, if it is has always been or becomes a regular occurrence, then it is considered Premature ejaculation. To prepare for your first PE evaluation, write down as much information about your problem as possible. This can include a journal of how much time before ejaculation and how often so that your doctor can have a better understanding of the severity of your case.

Premature Ejaculation Treatments

The treatments for PE can include behavioral techniques to lower stress and anxiety before intercourse. Methods to control the musculature of your groin and thrusts can aid in delaying PE. If those methods fail, there are topical anesthetics and oral medications which can aid in delaying PE. Medications such as SSRI antidepressants and certain analgesics can also help.Whichever method you and your doctor decide, it is important to talk with your partner about your desires and thoughts. An open line of communication often goes a long way. For more information, speak with your doctor today.
