Penile Fracture: Doc, I think I Broke Something...
Just recently a young man, mid thirties, came to me see on an emergency basis complaining about severe penile pain, bruising, and discoloration. It took only a quick look to determine that he had got penile fracture. He looked at me very surprised stating that "...how can I break my penis? There is no bone in there. So what's the deal with penile fracture?"Well, there is indeed a slight risk that you might suffer a penis fracture/penile fracture if you go wild during intercourse. Penis fracture or penile fracture is not breaking a bone, but a rupture of the tunica albuginea (a though fibrous tissue surrounding the corpora) of the corpus cavernosum (the erectile body), which may extend to the urethra and corpus spongiosum (the spongy body) The main causes of penile fracture or penis fracture include coitus, sudden forced bending of the erected penis, rolling over in bed, and masturbation. Penile fracture or penis fracture would typically present itself as a cracking sound, followed by penile swelling and pain, edema, hematoma (severe bruising), and "eggplant deformity."
