Penile Cancer Prevention and Detection

According to the American Cancer Society, around 300 people will die of penile cancer in 2013 and around 1500 new cases will be diagnosed. So, it is a fairly rare form of cancer. Still, it is good to be informed about how to prevent it and detect it so that your chances of getting it are greatly reduced. For starters, understand that the healthier you are overall, the least likely it will be that you get this form, or any form of cancer. However, it is still no guarantee. That is why early detection is so important.

What Are the Symptoms of Penile Cancer?

Penile Cancer

There are several symptoms of penile cancer. Keep in mind that some of these can signify other health problems. When in doubt, schedule an appointment with your urologist so that you can get checked out. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Pain or swelling of the penis
  • Changes in color, including unexplained redness, a rash, or itching
  • Penile discharge
  • A growth or sore that doesn't heal
  • Unexplained bleeding

When something doesn't feel right, you should definitely visit a doctor. Your goal is to get the right diagnosis so you can be on the most effective course of treatment.Observing the list of symptoms is a great first step in detecting it. As soon as something is not right, you’ll want to get diagnosed as soon as possible to maximize your rate of recovery.

Preventing Penile Cancer

There are some things that can help prevent penile cancer. Generally speaking, taking care of your body is the key. Eat the right foods. Taking care of yourself is a good thing because even if you do get diagnosed with it, being healthy will maximize your chances of beating it.Also, make sure you maintain good hygiene (wash the penis, scrotum, etc on a regular basis). Some cases of penile cancer may be linked to poor hygiene. In other words, it couldn't hurt to take care of yourself so you can prevent it.There are some things that are considered risk factors and should be avoided if possible.
