Many of our patients inquire about the average penis size. They want to know where they fall on the scale. Is their penis size normal, above average, or below average? The answer is more complex than a simple number, as there are many factors to consider.
Some men experience an emotional impact on their lives due to the size or their perception of the size of their penis. It can lead them to avoid sexual situations, low self-esteem, and even cause a decrease in sexual desire. It may make them feel inadequate or self-conscious. The truth is that most men fall along the lines of average when it comes to the size of their penis, and many men may not even realize it.
What Is The Average Penis Size?
All factors must be taken into account when considering the average size of a penis, including demographics, genes, and body type. Here is a generalized scale that you can use to understand the average penis size.
- Average flaccid penis length is 2.8 to 3.9 inches
- Average flaccid girth is 3.5 to 3.9 inches
- Average erect length is 4.7 to 6.3 inches
- Average erect girth is 4.6 to 4.8 inches
The flaccid length of the penis is not a true indicator of how long it will be when erect. The average erect penis is 5.2 inches in length. If the erect/stretched penis is less than 3.6 inches, then the man may be experiencing a condition known as micropenis.
In 2014, a systematic review was conducted by King’s College London, which examined 20 various studies, covering a total of 15,521 men. They concluded that the average length of a flaccid penis was 3.6 inches. Consistent measurements were taken from the base to the opening of the tip. The average circumference was 3.7 inches, which was measured around the mid-shaft.
The same review showed that the average size of an erect penis is 5.2 inches in length and 4.6 inches in circumference. Out of all the men reviewed, approximately 90% had an erect penis that measured between 4 inches to 6.3 inches in length.
How Do I Measure My Penis?
Measuring your penis can be done in a few easy steps.
- Be sure your penis is in a flaccid state - and erect or semi-erect state can, of course, affect length measurement
- Be sure the ambient temperature is at room temperature - temperature swings can affect the state and size of your penis
- Find a flexible tape measure - Be sure to use a tape measure that can fold and wrap around flexibly and comfortably
- Identify your pubic bone - Place your fingers around the base of your penis. Compress any pubic hair and/or fat until you feel the pubic bone at the base
- Identify the tip of your penis - Place your other fingers at the uppermost tip of your penis. Fold back any foreskin you may have as you do not want to count your foreskin
- Measure the length from the pubic bone on one end to the tip of your penis at the other end
To measure the girth (or width) of your penis,
- Again, ensure that your penis is in a flaccid state and that the ambient temperature is at room temperature
- Identify the mid-shaft of your penis - this is typically where girth (or width) measurements are done. Place two to three fingers below the head of your penis, and place two to three fingers above the base of your penis. This will give you a rough sense of where the mid-shaft point is
- Place the tape measure around the mid-shaft areas. Ensure that the tape measure is positioned in a way that you can read the measurement accurately
Please know that if you have any issues getting an accurate measurement of your penis, you can always ask your specialist to provide you with the measurement during a routine visit.
Talk To Your Partner
When a man is dissatisfied with the size of his penis, it can lead to a lot of emotional distress. It can ultimately cause a man to have anxiety during intercourse, which could jeopardize his relationship with his partner.
The best course of action is to discuss your fears and anxiety with your partner. Let them know how you are feeling. They will more than likely be able to help you through this type of anxiety and help you enjoy sexual intercourse once again.
Often we shut down when an issue arises that is embarrassing. Once you talk about it, you often become more relaxed and realize that it is not an issue at all for your partner. Just remember, we have a different view of ourselves. You and your partner may have very different expectations when it comes to penis size.
One alternative is to speak with a licensed sex therapist, who can help coach you through some of the difficulties that you are having with intercourse. Sometimes having an impartial, trained party come in and offer you advice can be very helpful. These types of therapists are specifically trained to help those who have issues with intercourse.
Explore Your Options
There are answers to your dissatisfaction. First and foremost, we recommend having a discussion with your partner and/or a sex therapist about how you feel. If it is still something that is bothering you, then you can seek the help of a physician.
