The penis is one of the most sensitive areas of the body. Most men who get penile implant surgery are initially worried about how long the pain will last.
The answer is it depends on the type of surgery. There are two reasons for getting a penis implant: penis enlargement or to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pain From Inflatable Penile Prosthesis for Erectile Dysfunction
The inflatable penile prosthesis is a surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Pain from this penile implant can typically last up to three weeks. Most men rate the pain as mild to moderate. Bruising and swelling can last up to six weeks after the procedure.
The patient is put under either general or regional anesthesia, so they don’t feel any pain during the surgery itself.
The pain is usually at its highest within the first five days of surgery. Patients have to stay overnight in the hospital since they may need to have urine drained from their bladder using a tube. This typically only lasts for 24 hours.
The patient can remove the bandage after three days. The surgeon typically prescribes pain medication to help the patient manage their pain.
The following is a list of some of the post-op actions the patient should take to minimize pain (please consult with your doctor for the full list):
- Don’t lift more than 10 pounds for a month
- Avoid playing sports or strenuous activity for six weeks
- Don’t have sex or masturbate for eight weeks
- Elevate the scrotum by putting a rolled-up shirt in between your legs
- Ice the pubic area (not the penis itself)
There are possible risks and complications with penile prosthesis surgery. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following:
- Unable to urinate
- Blood in the urine
- Burning or pain while urinating
- Pus draining from the incision area
- Increased pain or swelling in the scrotum, abdomen, or pubic area
Now let’s look at the recovery time for penis enlargement surgery that makes use of a penile implant.
Pain From Aesthetic Penile Implant
The Penuma penile implant is made of medical-grade silicone and used to aesthetically enhance the penis.
The Penuma surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically sees patients home the same day The patient is put under anesthesia, so they don’t feel the small incision made in the scrotal area. There is no incision on the penis itself.
This procedure doesn’t affect the patient’s ability to urinate or ejaculate. The recovery process is different for each patient and depends upon several variables, including:
- Individual pain sensitivity and tolerance
- Health status and presence of comorbidities
- Quality and stretchability of penile skin
- Daily activities included in the individual’s routine
Some patients are pain-free after just a few days, while for others, some level of mild to moderate pain and discomfort can last up to four weeks. Pain while urinating may occur for the first couple of times after surgery, but usually quickly subsides. Pain while getting an erection inadvertently may last 4 to 6 weeks (sexual activity must be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks and sometimes longer depending on the individual patient).
The surgeon prescribes pain medications to help you manage the pain. Mild to moderate swelling is also normal within the first two weeks. Special care needs to be taken to make sure the incision heals properly. The surgeon gives the patient complete and detailed instructions, including how to make sure the incision does not open.
Most men can return to work after a couple of days. Those whose work involves heavy lifting or strenuous activity have to stay sidelined for a couple of weeks. The surgeon will give you detailed, estimated timelines based on your individual circumstances.
The patient has multiple follow-up appointments with their surgeon to make sure the healing process is progressing as it should be.
Regardless of which penile implant procedure you are getting, it is important to remember every person’s healing process is different as is every person’s pain tolerance.
