Do Women with higher testosterone levels have higher drives?
Testosterone is not a “male-only” hormone. In fact, testosterone plays a key role in a woman’s sex drive. It facilitates sexual desire and provides motivation (energy) for sex.
Testosterone Effects on Women
As women grow older, their testosterone levels decrease. The decrease of testosterone reduces muscle mass, weakens skeletal strength, and can also decrease sensitivity in the vagina. The desensitivity of the vagina can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and a lowering of the libido. It is believed that the link between low libido and menopause is due to low testosterone levels.
It’s Complicated
A woman’s sex drive and orgasm are influenced by a variety of complex systems. One’s lifestyle, overall emotional health, and stress level can greatly affect a woman’s sex drive. Because a woman’s libido can be affected by many things, it is hard to say that just upping her intake of testosterone will boost her drive. In fact, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have yet to approve testosterone replacement therapy for women. Many researchers are concerned with the long-term effect testosterone can have on women.
Side Effects
Testosterone can have effects on the body. Some of the most common symptoms of too much testosterone can be excess body hair, acne, balding, decrease breast size, and increased muscle mass. When testosterone is in the body it’s converted into estrogen. Too much testosterone (resulting in too much estrogen) can lead to breast cancer. A study of 814 women with low sexual desire looked to a testosterone patch to help ignite their libidio. Four of the women involved in this study developed breast cancer. The researchers are not able to conclude is this is because of the testosterone intake, but conclusions can be made that above average hormone levels can result in cancer.
